Reunification Therapist Required Qualifications

The following lists all of the requirements that you should look for when searching for a Reunification Therapist.

Texas Requirements

Texas law has established the following rules, as codified in the Texas 29th congress HB3783. Mental health professionals participating in court-ordered therapy/counseling must have:

  • A background in Family Therapy
  • A mental health license that requires a minimum of a master’s degree
  • Training in the dynamics of family violence (when the subject case is relevant to family violence)

Other Requirements

A Reunification Therapist should be an experienced licensed therapist that is acquainted with the various issues involved in working with high conflict families. A qualified reunification psychotherapist should have familiarity with the family court system, as well as clinical training in multiple treatment methods which should include:

  • Specialized training in the treatment of Parental Alienation and issues of Estrangement
  • Specialized training in family therapy techniques
  • Individual Treatment and forensic interviewing of children
  • Training in mediation techniques and co-parent counseling
  • Training in trauma related treatment modalities and the treatment of anxiety disorders
  • Training in domestic violence and substance abuse issues
  • Familiarity with the family court system and Texas Family Code
  • Membership in the International Parental Alienation Study Group (PASG) which conducts annual training and continuously updates their professional members on the latest research about Parental Alienation
