Texas Requirements
Texas law has established the following rules, as codified in the Texas 29th congress HB3783. Mental health professionals participating in court-ordered therapy/counseling must have:
- A background in Family Therapy
- A mental health license that requires a minimum of a master’s degree
- Training in the dynamics of family violence (when the subject case is relevant to family violence)
Other Requirements
A Reunification Therapist should be an experienced licensed therapist that is acquainted with the various issues involved in working with high conflict families. A qualified reunification psychotherapist should have familiarity with the family court system, as well as clinical training in multiple treatment methods which should include:
- Specialized training in the treatment of Parental Alienation and issues of Estrangement
- Specialized training in family therapy techniques
- Individual Treatment and forensic interviewing of children
- Training in mediation techniques and co-parent counseling
- Training in trauma related treatment modalities and the treatment of anxiety disorders
- Training in domestic violence and substance abuse issues
- Familiarity with the family court system and Texas Family Code
- Membership in the International Parental Alienation Study Group (PASG) which conducts annual training and continuously updates their professional members on the latest research about Parental Alienation
